To many people, the notion that even in time of war there are rules that remain applicable despite all the surrounding horror comes as a shock. And yet it is true. A small portion of International Law applies precisely in time of war. It used to be known as the Law of War, as opposed to Humanitarian Law, but the adoption of new treaties in the 70's blurred the distinction and now the generally accepted term is International Humanitarian Law, also referred to as IHL.

IHLBooks.com offers to researchers as complete a collection as possible of books dealing with IHL and the Law of War. Many of these books are not easy to find and are usually hidden in Law Libraries of Colleges or Military Academies. We hope that their being listed here will give them more recognition, as the field itself has become more popular with the public.

This site is divided into several sections:
IHL: its history, content and contemporary issues.
Red Cross: the history of the Red Cross Movement is littered with accounts of heroic behavior by its representatives on many dangerous operational fronts. Their stories will give the reader pause.
History: books about relief actions made possible by the application of IHL.
War Crimes: the many instances where the rules of IHL were unfortunately ignored, and their aftermath.
Humanitarianism: are humanitarian actions always beneficial to the intended victims? And when is Humanitarian intervention justified?
Current: section devoted to current conflicts, or past conflicts with contemporary ramifications.
Miscellaneous: other books that do not quite fit in the categories above but remain nevertheless relevant to the topics covered on this site. Many books pertaining to the field of Human Rights will be found here.
Authors: if you know the name of an author but can't remember the title of the book he or she wrote, look here.
Titles: if you remember the title, look up this listing to find the book you're looking for.

Disclosure: This site contains for the most part Amazon.com affiliate links attached to each title listed. If you buy a book through one of these links (after clicking on a title or a book cover, which will take you to the corresponding Amazon.com page), the owner of this site may get a small commission, at no additional cost to you. And when a book cannot be found on Amazon, an alternate link is provided, particularly for titles in foreign languages.
